Heather became passionate about knitting from her first lesson in 2003. She was a new stay-at-home mom to an infant and wanted something interesting to do to get out of the house. She knew how to crochet (her grandmother taught her at a young age) but had never learned how to knit and was always curious to learn. Knitting classes were offered locally and it was love at first knit. As a devoted, lifelong learner, the minute she learned about TKGA and the Master Knitter program, she signed up.

She became a TKGA-certified Master Hand Knitter in 2014 and was immediately asked to serve on the MHK Committee. She was appointed as a Co-Chair on the committee in 2018 and served  in that role until being asked to serve as VP of Education on the Board of Directors in 2020. She was one of TKGA’s first certified Tech Editors and their first certified Knitting Instructor, in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Heather also serves on the Cast On editorial committee and has been the Editor of TKGA’s monthly K2TOG newsletter since late 2018.

With a background in engineering (chemical engineering to be exact), and a short stint teaching high school science, she took to teaching knitting classes right away. She began teaching at a LYS well over 20 years ago, and now Heather teaches nationally at retreats, conferences, fiber festivals, and online. You may have seen her at NY Sheep and Wool, Southeastern Animal Fiber Fest, Dallas FW Fiber Fest, and elsewhere. Her classes focus heavily on the history of our craft, as well as the technical details. Her main goal is for students to come away empowered and confident – and to become fearless knitters!

Heather also designs and has been designing knitwear almost as long as she has been teaching. Designing only items that tickle her fancy, she loves designing socks, lace shawls, and Fair Isle garments, among other things. Her designs have been published in Cast On magazine, Knitscene, Knitty, and in several Knit Picks book publications. She also self-publishes designs. You can find her designs on Ravelry and on her website.

BIO ~ Heather Storta

Heather’s childhood was spent moving frequently, due to her father’s career (he was a Chemical Engineer focusing on a niche field, so the family moved where the manufacturers were.) With that upbringing, she learned how to make friends quickly, despite being a shy introvert. She followed in her father’s footsteps, becoming a Chemical Engineer herself, graduating from Georgia Tech, and working for a time at a chemical plant. She had a short stint as a high school science teacher around the time she met and married her husband in Georgia. The newlyweds moved to the Charlotte, NC area shortly after marriage, and have been living there ever since. Upon having children, Heather became a stay-at-home mom, and then a homeschooling mom to her two boys. She successfully homeschooled her boys all the way through high school, and they are now attending college. She learned how to knit when her firstborn was an infant, and her passion for knitting grew as her boys grew. Knitting gradually became her career. In 2014, she become a Master Knitter, and many things fell into place that year: she taught at her first industry conference, had her first published knitwear pattern, and was asked to serve on the MHK Committee. Now, some years later, she works full-time as a teacher, tech editor, editor, and designer, and loves it!
