Introduction

In Venice the streets are made of water, well at least most of them. The city itself is made of over a 100 island all connected.


Venice is living history, the palaces, the museums, the churches and all the architecture in the city make it quite unique a city unlike any other.

Holland America will dock at the Terminal Venezia Passeggeri or the Venice Cruise Port.


Transportation

The most famous way to travel around Venice is by Vaporetti or a Water Bus It cost about 5 euro and runs every 15 minutes. Another way to travel is by water shuttles from the ship, this will drop you off around San Marco Square. There are also water taxis available for you to jump on.


Don't look for a car rental stand or store, there are no cars allowed in Venice.


Venice Card

If you are planning on using public transportation all day, you might want to purchase a Venice Card. For people who are 29 and younger the price is 9 Euros, and the cost is 14 Euros for people who 30 and older. You must buy in advance at www.venicecard.com.


Sightseeing

Check out the Piazza San Marco, here you will see the Basilica di San Marco, the Torre dell'Orologio clock tower and the arcade of Procuratie Vecchie and Nuove.

The Grand Canal is something you might be interested, it is Venice's highway system of water ways, this dates back to the 17th Century. You can take a gondala ride here.


You can take a boat over to Guidecca this is where many people of Venice now live. You can also take a trip over to Murano, you can see many glass blowing techinques. Another island you can visit is Burano famous for brightly colored house and hand made lace.

- You will be denied entrance to many Italian churches if your attire is inappropriate, make sure your knees and shoulders are covered.
