Sarande, Albania

Sarandë is a seaside resort town in southern Albania with rocky beaches and a promenade boasting spectacular scenery. In the center of town visitors can explore the archaeological remains of a 5th-century synagogue, later an early Christian basilica. Intricate floor mosaics are still evident. The 16th-century Lëkurësi Castle is on a hilltop above the town.

Albanians are considered to be the best carved-stone workers in the world and nearby visitors will find ancient cities and archeological ruins. Sarandë is bustling with restaurants, cafes and bars with a variety of tasty and cheap options from which to choose. Sarandë is a great place to purchase handmade lacework items and is a base for visiting the ancient ruins of Butrint.

Albania has an interesting history few know about because it was totally isolated from the rest of the world until recently because it was ruled by a Communist dictator. With little infrastructure visiting here is best done by cruise ship and has the greatest appeal to those coming for short visits since infrastructure is still quite limited in this emerging country.
