Inspired by the Japanese love of texture, this lace and cables cowl/ scarf uses worsted weight yarn and is cast on along the short end, worked to the desired length. The knitter can then decide to join the short ends into a cowl or keep it as a traditional flat scarf. Class includes a discussion on combining stitch patterns and edges needed to keep the piece flat.

Description ~ Unraveling Japanese Stitch Dictionaries
The Japanese are known for their beautiful combinations of stitches. Everything is charted, however their charts in just a tad bit different than our own and they incorporate many unique texture elements such as wrapped stitches, elongated stitches, bobbles. This class will explore what is available in the American market so you know what you are looking at if you find something that does not offer English translations. In class students will make a quick cup cozy to practice some of the more unusual elements together.

Commemorate your trip to Japan and try some two-handed stranded colorwork to capture a fantastic memory of our cruise. Alissa has created a cowl that incorporates a Japanese colorwork aesthetic using at least two colors (add more shades into the contrast colorway with mini skeins for some pop) of fingering weight yarn. Students will learn how to hold a different color in each and and use the ladder-back jacquard technique to manage the longer floats without compromising the stretchy fabric or those pesky errant dots of color that pop out when you "catch" a long float.

Traveling and twisting across the fabric, these simple stitches work together to dazzle. Students will knit a fingerless mitt, perfect for this super elastic fabric, with a charted design in a range of sizes. This class will discuss following the charts and using the unusual dynamics of twisted stitches to your benefit.

Description ~ Japanese Knitting Tricks
These little differences can really make an impact on your everyday work. This class will cover Japanese short rows (and how to use them in place of wrap and turn or German short rows) and the Japanese buttonband trick to smooth out these bottom edges as well as deciphering Japanese schematics and learning a few Kanji characters that will make following their publications easier.
