Located on the west side of Maputo Bay, this city is unlike any other found in southern Africa. It has an indescribable charm, despite its lack of resources for rebuilding and renovating like most other large cities across the world. Though this city was never involved in fighting a war, it was neglected and has suffered since. History depicts graceful tree-lined streets and a colorful Central Market, whereas now visitors will find Portuguese-style buildings that were once so beautiful, now left crumbling under the economic strain.

Maputo is known to have a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere which is something not experienced in many places in Africa. Given this cities history and struggles, it is almost hard to believe that it used to be Mozambique’s political, cultural and economic capital. Needless to say, this city is rich with culture and history, and is definitely a great place to visit.
