Avatoru, Rangiroa, French Polynesia

Avatoru (the chief town of Rangiroa) is among the largest reefs in the world. Situated approximately 185 miles northeast of Papeete, it consists of roughly 240 islets that surround a huge lagoon that measures almost 42 miles long and 14 miles wide. The name Rangiroa derives from a Polynesian word meaning “huge sky” which is rather fitting as the blue skies overhead dominate the vista.
