New York, New York

Introduction

New York is considered by many to be the greatest and most diverse city in the world.  It is dynamic and full of high energy.  Like many cities it has distinct neighborhoods and shopping districts.  Make sure you check out the yarn stores on our Yarn Shop Finder as well as the shopping list provided with your cruise documents for special discounts.

Port Orientation

Holland America and Cunard will dock in Manhattan on the West Side; the passenger ship terminals are located off the West Side Highway (12th Avenue). Many other cruise lines dock at Cape Liberty in New Jersey.  Check your cruise ticket to be sure.


Transportation

There are three (3) airports that serve New York.  The airports are JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International. LaGuardia and Newark are located approximately 10 miles from the New York Cruise Terminal, and JFK is located 17 miles from the New York Cruise Terminals. La Guardia and Newark are approximately 35-45 minutes away and for JFK add another 30 minutes.


Super Shuttle provides service to Manhattan 24 hours a day.  No reservation is necessary; just go to the ground-transportation desk or use the courtesy phone in baggage claim. Tickets range from $13 - $22. For more information, visit www.supershuttle.com.


Taxis are available at all airports and cost approximately $15 to $40.

In Manhattan walking is your best option.  But you can also use the busses and subways easily with a little instruction from a map or hotel consierge.  Taxi cabs are another option but can be slow and expensive.  During rush hour (7:30am-9:30am and 5:00pm -7:00pm, expect crowds.  There are also water taxis and a free hop on/hop off bus service for getting around between South Street Seaport and northern Battery Park City.


Remember the transit fare of $2 allows for unlimited transfers on all lines. If you are using a MetroCard, you can transfer to any bus within two hours of entering the subway.


MetroCards are sold at subway stations, newsstands and some stores.  A one-day Fun Pass is $7.
