Skagway, Alaska

Introduction

Skagway was put on the map by the hoards of stampeders bound for the gold fields back in the late 1800's. With its rich gold rush history and scenic beauty Skagway is easily one of Alaska's most popular ports of call. This historic town has an old time feeling with its gold rush era fronted buildings and wooden sidewalks.

Port Orientation
Ships dock in three locations but all of them are an easy walk to town.

Transportation
Walking is the best way to see this cute little town. Most shops are on Broadway.

Sightseeing
A stop at Skagway would not be complete without a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. The narrow-gauge train winds through granite mountains and trundles across steep gorges and long tunnels. Historical walking tours are also very popular as is having a beer in the Red Onion Saloon which was formerly a brothel.

Or if you really want to get off the beaten path try a slightseeing tour that includes mushing a dog sled team.
