Fort Lauderdale, FL

Overview

Although originally a fort to protect against the Seminole Indians and built on top of wetlands, Fort Lauderdale is now a beautiful city with more things to do than one can accomplish in one visit. Expansive and intricate waterways criss-cross the city and gave it the nickname of "Venice of America". However, Fort Lauderdale has two times more waterways than Venice. Fort Lauderdale is a fantastic place to explore and experience on your cruise.

Ship Location

Being one of the busiest cruise ports in North America, cruise ships dock at Port Everglades, a short 10 minute drive by cab or shuttle from downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Getting Around

With more than 300 miles of navigational waterways, transportation of choice in Fort Lauderdale is by an inexpensive water taxi, the water-equal to the city's trolley service. Fort Lauderdale also provides a $1-per-ride Sun Trolley to take visitors wherever they desire to go within the city limits, cheaply and conveniently. When the sun goes down, a romantic horse-drawn carriage is a perfect way to enjoy Fort Lauderdale's nightlife.

Attractions

Once known for it's rowdy, college-spring-break scene, Fort Lauderdale has reestablished itself as a friendly, family-oriented destination, with many things to do for all types of people. Shopping is a must, with tons of boutiques and markets. Walk around Sawgrass Mills, a shopping outlet with about 400 brand-name stores, or the Festival Flea Market with great bargains and awesome souvenirs. Or even explore Las Olas Boulevard, a stretch of Fort Lauderdale filled with shopping, dining, and attractions. For a more laid-back excursion, take a stroll through Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, a short walk from the beachside attractions, complete with beaches, bicycling, fishing, picnicking, wildlife viewing, and more. Fort Lauderdale also boasts world-class sightseeing, theaters, and museums.
