Description ~ The Icelandic Lopapeysa Pullover
This workshop delves into the history and techniques of the beautiful yoked sweater of Iceland, the Lopapeysa. The main features of this garment are color work around the yoke area, above the bottom edge, and above the cuffs; circular construction; dealing with more than two colors in a round at times; and working German short rows across the back to make the garment fit better.
A small version of this pullover will be knitted in class, working the body and sleeves in the round from the top down. Yarn dominance, working with two or more yarns within a round, weaving the yarns, working short rows two ways, and reading the charts are some of the skills to be learned in this class. There will also be some discussion about Kitchener stitch, handling the traditional plötulopi (plates of unspun) yarns, and planning your own Lopi sweater.

Using wristers as a template, some of the beautiful knitting methods of Latvia will be studied in this class. Knit one of a pair of wristers to learn the following techniques which can be applied to mitten cuffs, sock tops or sleeves: a scalloped cuff, the herringbone braid and many subtle and beautiful variations of the half-braid. A choice of traditional motifs is incorporated in the main part of the wrister, as well as a picot edge at the end. Additional techniques to be discussed include knitting with two yarns in the right hand, two yarns in the left hand, or a yarn in each hand, as well as knitting with three colors and setting up the knitting for color changes in the braids.

The 400-year-old Swedish technique of Twined, or Two-End, Knitting yields lots of possibilities in both texture and color. This unusual method of knitting produces a very warm, firmly elastic fabric. In this six-hour class, knit one of a pair of mittens while learning a traditional twined cast-on, a half-braid, and working traditional motifs.
