Danube Waltz Knitting Cruise (December 2011) ~ Knitting Cruises Description

Danube Waltz

Join Karen Alfke and Craft Cruises on this magical adventure to visit places where so many Christmas traditions began and fairy tales were born. Learn helpful knitting skills, make new friends and experience Europe like the locals do at this festive time of year. The Danube Waltz is a very popular itinerary always selling out far in advance. and when you combine this with the spirit of the season and expert knitting instruction you've got a trip of a lifetime.

Viking River Cruises is most known for exceptional service combined with the daily inclusive private sightseeing tours to the best craft markets in Europe. This trip begins in Munich where each participant will start a new knit-a-long trip project, meet local knitters and shop for German yarns at amazing prices. Your expert knitting instructor, Karen Alfke, is a designer and instructor who learned to knit while living in Germany nearly thirty years ago. By learning to design simultaneously with learning to knit, Karen learned not to use other people's patterns. By keeping pattern shapes simple Karen shows how to easily change yarns, gauges and design elements at will.

Munich Yarn Crawl

Munich has a vibrant fiber community with great shops, small indie dyers and knitting cafes. Craft Cruises will arrange a full day of fiber events and shopping while giving the opportunity to connect with local knitters. Mickey, an American knitter who lives in Munich, will share her perspective of an American knitter living in Europe while showing us her favorite fiber spots.

Rohrspatz & Wollmeise - Plans are in the works to visit Claudia to learn more about her wonderful handpainted yarns. These lovely sock and worsted weight yarns are highly recommended because of their quality and vibrant colorways. While Claudia does not technically have a shop in Munich (she sells her lovely yarns online) we are making arrangements to have this absolutely lovely "souvenir" yarn available for our group.

Lanaiolo - This new knit cafe yarn store is owned by Katharina Ritter, who is a popular knitwear designer. This yarn store has a lovely selection with lots of luxury yarns and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Katharina Ritter is the author of "Fairy Tale Knitting" which is a wonderful collection of designs inspired by fairy tales. Although her inspiration may be dated her designs are very trendy and fashionable.

Tollwood market - This is an "alternative" Christmas Craft Market in Munich with lots of hand made items including hand-knits. This popular winter festival takes place in the heart of Munich every year starting just before Advent Sunday running through the end of the year. This cultural festival offers numerous performances and activities focusing on multiculturalism and tolerance. More than 70% of all the events are free of charge and millions enjoy the festival's festivities every year.
